Travels with Annie

In September 2005, I was diagnosed with the second recurrence of an agressive breast cancer that appeared first in 1997. My book, Travels With Annie: A Journey of Healing and Adventure (Publish America, 2004) chronicles my first bout with cancer and subsequent travels. This time I will share my thoughts and experiences in verse for my friends and acquaintances.

Health Update 2-19-06

Dear Friends,
I go for another treatment Tuesday. This time I will have the kinder, gentler treatment with only one of the drugs. It looks like I won't be through with chemo until the end of March, at least. We're switching to every other week because the 3 weeks on and 1 off never worked too well for me. Always missed the third week because of my white count and then would catch a cold and miss the next week too. My doc said this works well for some of his "little old ladies." Then we'll have another scan in about a month. This little place right above my collarbone doesn't want to give in. My low energy level is the main problem I am experiencing.
I so miss Mexico. It is about 20º here tonight and we have had rain, sleet, and ice. It was 70º last Thursday, so I thought winter was over. Silly me! Buddy pesters me all morning, because I won't go out walking with him. I cannot kick an old cold that wants to hang on. I can only dream about the juicy Mexican weather, the pristine Chacala Bay, and my garden blooming with hibiscus and bougainvilla. Our Learning Center and Scholarship Program are thriving. So, I can only look forward to spring in Arkansas—the daffodils and then the tulips in our amazing woodland botanical gardens, the dogwood and azaleas in my yard, and long, slow kayak rides on the lake. Dear friends are coming to visit, and I will say goodbye to the winter birds, like the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, believe it or not, who has been working on the hickory tree right off my deck. He will go back north for the summer.
Then, mid July, I will be blessed with another granddaughter. Tim and Amy, in Dallas, are having a baby, to add to their family of five. They are very happy, and this grandma is very excited. My grandchildren in Little Rock are doing well, also. I'm looking forward to a trip to Alaska with a college friend in August, and visiting other friends in the Northwest.
Love and Blessings to you all, Ann
