Travels with Annie

In September 2005, I was diagnosed with the second recurrence of an agressive breast cancer that appeared first in 1997. My book, Travels With Annie: A Journey of Healing and Adventure (Publish America, 2004) chronicles my first bout with cancer and subsequent travels. This time I will share my thoughts and experiences in verse for my friends and acquaintances.

The Walk in the Woods by Emily Getzoff

Emily with Buddy and Casey

One day afer dinner, my father said to me, “Let’s go on a father-daughter walk.” How could I say no? I loved walking in the woods! So I said OK and we went. When we got to the woods we walked a little ways then I saw my dog, Casey, chasing a big tan dog with pointed ears and a white, short tail. After a few seconds, I realized that the big dog was really a deer. We kept on walking.

We hadn’t seen my dog in awhile, so I called for him. He didn’t come. He was lost! We kept on walking and we went down into the park. Then I heard a little boy shout “His name is Casey.” So I raced over there and there was my dog almost passed out in the grass! I got my dad over to where I was and we put Casey on the leash.

I was ready to go home so we started to head for home. We walked up a BIG hill and we were walking with my Grandma’s dog, too (Buddy). A biker was coming so Buddy went off the trail and he stepped in a nest of yellow jackets. They got so mad they were stinging Buddy everywhere, and I got stung too, right in the back. The bees were in Daddy’s hair, so he was hopping around trying to get them out. So my mom came and picked me up, and when I got in the car, Buddy hopped in too, and he was full of yellow-jackets. My mom was yelling at Buddy to get him out of the car, I was crying, and we were so loud that all the neighbors came out to see what was going on.

We drove home, leaving Daddy with the two dogs, and my mom put ice on my stings.
